GPU's are difficult to stress test. Unlike CPUs or RAM, they are often the only component in a PC that is not designed to work at 100% load. As graphics hardware evolves with 

increasingly dynamic power and frequency behavior

, traditional full-load tests no longer reflect real usage nor reliably expose stability issues.

Unlike CPUs and RAM, which can be stressed safely at 100% for quick stability detection, 

GPUs are not designed to run at maximum load.

 In gaming, the workload is highly dynamic and typically averages around 50% real utilization.

Why? Because of the CPU-GPU dependency loop. Playing a game involves both components, it's a fifty-fifty between the CPU and the GPU. The CPU handles game logic, object positions, inputs, sound and world state, while the GPU renders textures, meshes, shaders, effects, and the final frame. Both wait for each other during this process.

GPUs never really reach their absolute maximum power draw during real gameplay.

 Manufacturers eventually optimized designs around this reality: peak clock speeds now occur at medium load (40% to 60%), instead of at 100%.

This results in an efficiency curve where lower load equals higher clocks, while higher load produces lower clocks. Crucially, following this logic, many GPUs are stable under 100% load but unstable at their peak-frequency mid-load states.

It's a very complex scenario and it needed a novel approach.

Why Traditional Testing Doesn't Work (Anymore)

Traditionally, classic GPU stress tests force the card to full power instantly. But this approach no longer reflects real life conditions, because if the GPU is pushed to 100%, then it’s not operating at its max clock speed. A stress test pushing your GPU to 100% might display no error, but you could encounter an error at 50%.

For example, comparing OCCT's 3D Adaptive test with a FurMark test on a RTX4070 Ti shows that FurMark locks to max power instantly, while 

 It also shows that OCCT reaches higher peak clocks because the load is lighter and more realistic. We can also see that OCCT exercises a wider range of voltage levels.

This exposes instability FurMark simply cannot detect, and this is why OCCT is using variable loads.

OCCT's Solution: 3D Adaptive and Variable Mode

How do we solve that problem? By trying to 

replicate a maximum of different loads and scenarios.

 That's what OCCT does with 3D Adaptive: a 3D test that can change its load dynamically. With a single click, you can run a short yet effective 3D test that will also hit instability zones between 40% and 60% intensity.

using OCCT's Switch mode (to illustrate, this could reproduce the load happening when switching between menus, windows, games, tasks, etc). This is what we call transient testing, it's extremely demanding on GPU power delivery and can expose issues you wouldn't see with a traditional stress test.

This is ideal for AI workstations, compute servers, mining rigs, multi-GPU rendering systems, etc. And just a single click starts the test across the entire machine.

What's New in OCCT v15: a Comparison with v14

, especially for consistent behavior across GPUs from different brands.

Using the Enterprise edition's reporting and comparison tools, we can illustrate the improvements by comparing OCCT v14 vs. v15.

In this example, we're testing an NVIDIA RTX 5080 using OCCT Variable mode, increasing the intensity by 5% every 20 seconds. It's important to emphasize intensity because it doesn't automatically translate to the load reported by your driver.

In red is the curve for the new test in OCCT v15, and the blue is OCCT v14.

We can see the power curve on OCCT v15 is much smoother, and scales lower than v14.

Now onto the GPU clock curves for the same setup.

We can see that the clock curve peaks faster at mid-load (40% to 60%), and OCCT v15 is reading much lower clocks in the early part of the curve. Testing at lower clock has its use as well. Typically, you exit a game and your PC crashes. OCCT just got better at detecting that too.

Inside OCCT's modern adaptive approach to GPU stress testing

We're thrilled to announce that OCCT v15 is now officially out of beta! A big thank you to everyone who helped us test and refine this release over the past few weeks.

The stable release of our new Storage Test and Benchmark.

A major 3D Adaptive Test update, with better error detection and a new coil whine detection feature.

And finally, the long-awaited return of OCCT skins, with LinusTechTips and Corsair kicking things off!

Storage Test and Benchmark Stable Release

The new Storage Test is now officially stable and available to all users, including OCCT Pro and Enterprise editions. If you missed it during beta, this feature 

stress-tests your SSDs and HDDs under heavy workloads and high temperatures 

to validate performance and reliability. However, keep in mind that this test can be very intense for your components and very frequent use can impact your SSD and HDD lifespan, though normal usage poses no significant risk.

We didn't try to reinvent the wheel here, instead we aimed to deliver metrics people are familiar with. That's why we built our benchmark model around CrystalDiskMark-style metrics, providing results that are efficient, comparable, and easy to interpret. It will take us some time still to build the database and give you more meaningful comparative data overtime.

With these additions, OCCT continues to evolve toward an all-in-one tool that enthusiasts and professionals can use for reliable data without the need for multiple software.

OCCT v15 isn't just about storage, it's also a big leap forward for our GPU test. Our 

3D Adaptive test has been made significantly more demanding and precise 

The test works the same as before, but we've improved error detection efficiency. Though you might notice lower frequencies or lower power consumption on some GPU's because the test triggers protection mechanism more aggressively at maximum intensity.

In short: the new 3D Adaptive test pushes your GPU harder, smarter, and catches issues with greater accuracy.

One of the more experimental and fun addition in v15 is the new Coil Whine Detection feature.

When working in noisy environments, it can be tough to tell whether a system is producing coil whine. While refining the 3D Adaptive Test, we noticed that in Switch mode GPU fan noise varies depending on load intensity, and thought, “what if we could control that and make the GPU ‘sing’?” 

Turns out, we can! We're starting with three different tunes, with plans to add more, and maybe even let you create your own in the future.

It's important to note that results can vary depending on your GPU model and overall configuration, including factors such as the type of coils used on the board, cooling system, and the case.

Some of you might remember the Cooler Master skin. Sadly, that one's gone, but after taking time to rethink how we handle skins and partnerships, we're thrilled to announce their return in v15.

OCCT v15: storage test & benchmark, 3D adaptive test upgrade and new skins

2025 has already been an exciting year for OCCT! We launched the Linux version in April, which is now included in the Arch Linux and CachyOS repositories. We attended Computex in Taipei, released OCCT on Steam in June, and enhanced the Enterprise+ dashboard with a new device view and additional features.

Now, we're excited to introduce the new storage stress test and a Linux update!

The SSD and HDD stress tests are now available

The long-awaited storage test beta is now available for both Windows and Linux for OCCT Personal users and will soon be fully integrated into Pro and Enterprise versions.

However, keep in mind that this stress test can be very intense for your components and very frequent use can impact your SSD and HDD lifespan, though normal usage poses no significant risk.

We heard from professional users that OCCT wasn't working on older Linux distributions. Previously, support only went back as far as Debian Bookworm (to use Debian as a rough timeline).

With this update, we've lowered the requirements to 

make OCCT compatible with a much wider range of Linux versions

, both old and new. We now expect to support distributions released as far back as 2018 – Debian's Bullseye's era.

Skins! We've talked about them a lot now, but 

, has been signed by Microsoft. This means we're nearing release, and we'll soon be ready to take development requests.

Planned for the beginning of next year, our 

will give Professionals the ability to host their OCCT data locally instead of relying on Ocbase servers, giving them full control over their data with a simple installation process.

We're thrilled to announce two major updates coming with v15: a brand-new storage stress test and a dedicated update to the Linux version of OCCT!

OCCT v15 Beta: new storage test and Linux update

With the recent release of OCCT for Linux, we encountered new challenges. One of them was the detection of graphics cards on Linux

On Windows, simply installing the drivers is enough to enable support for OpenCL and DirectX. This is not always the case on Linux, where OpenCL support is optional.

Finding which OpenCL adapter corresponds to which in DirectX is particularly challenging, some vendors make this relatively easy, while others don’t. As a result, it’s hard to tell which adapter from one API matches the one reported by another. This can prevent OCCT from running its 3D certification tests, particularly the VRAM tests which rely on OpenCL. 

Additionally, supporting DirectX on Windows required maintaining a separate rendering path on our engine.

That’s why in version 14.2, we’ve decided to drop DirectX and switch to Vulkan by default.

This change simplifies development and maintenance, enables a unified graphics card detection algorithm across Windows and Linux, and makes the implementation more robust overall.

As a bonus, performance has slightly improved. Vulkan uses fewer resources, making OCCT less demanding during tests and resulting in even more accurate measurements.

The Steam version of OCCT is finally live and ready for action! While the release took a bit longer than expected, we're extremely proud of the results and the smooth experience we've delivered, especially on the Steam Deck, where OCCT runs flawlessly in portable mode.

OCCT SSD test development has officially begun

We're excited to confirm that our next major update will introduce the long-awaited SSD Test to OCCT! While we don't have an exact release date just yet, development is already underway, and we're aiming for a summer launch this year.

Long-time OCCT users will remember having the ability to customize the look of OCCT with skins. We're happy to announce that the feature is making a comeback! 

We're currently working with several brands, such as Linus Tech Tips, to create official skins for OCCT, and we plan to release the first batch during the summer.

New opportunities for server manufacturers and maintenance teams

As Linux is a dominant OS in the server industry, OCCT for Linux provides

OCCT has officially released on Linux

That's right—that's the name (at least for now)! Our replacement for WinRing0 is called 0Ring (pun intended), and it's set for release in a couple of months. Designed with security and stability as top priorities, 0Ring will be a closed-source solution with the following key features: 

These measures ensure that 0Ring remains a reliable and secure alternative for the community. This also ensures that we don't run into another ban situation moving forward.

As we've stated before, 0Ring will be free for non-commercial users. If your application isn't making money, or only generates pocket change, we won't charge you. However, if you're a business or your app becomes profitable, we kindly ask for your support to sustain development.

With 0Ring's launch approaching, we're open to discussions with developers who want early access or potential collaboration. If you're interested, reach out to us!

Two weeks ago, we announced our plan to develop an alternative to WinRing0 following its ban by Microsoft. Since then, our team has been hard at work creating a new solution for the community.

AN UPDATE ON WINRING0 – INTRODUCING 0RING

In a recent move aimed at enhancing Windows security, Microsoft has banned Winring0 for a few days, a low-level driver extensively used by many monitoring, system information and overclocking tools made by the community, allowing them to access low-level information. This change has stunned many, discovering their favorite software didn't function anymore.

At OCCT, we believe that innovation must continue, even in the face of industry-wide disruptions. 

That's why we've taken proactive measures to provide a fully compliant, legitimate, and free driver replacement. Let's dive into what this change means, and how we're turning it into an opportunity to better serve the community.

The decision to ban Winring0 is part of Microsoft's ongoing commitment to enhancing the overall security of Windows.

However, it allows anyone to access any low-level function as they please, defeating any kind of security Microsoft implemented in Windows relatively recently. Drivers must be contained to their own devices/purposes, and WinRing0 is giving you access to everything.

While precious and very valuable for every tinkerer and enthusiast out there, it is a gaping wound Microsoft is trying to close forcefully. As this driver was used by a lot of applications - even by some big companies under the hood for its ease of use and to gain some development time - the grace period is coming to an end.

OCCT's Response: A Safe and Compliant Alternative

At OCBASE, we understand this risk, and actually foreshadowed it in our latest video, recorded right before the ban and covering this issue. We don't want to stay inactive when some of our beloved software are in danger.

With the Linux release of OCCT, we created our own monitoring engine. To bring it to Windows, we needed a driver. The decision was simple : make a version of that driver that can replace Winring0 all while complying with Microsoft's security policy.

We already have the certificates needed to develop this driver, and development was planned to start soon. We propose to make it available to others so they can use it themselves.

The driver will be completely free for the community. 

We stand firmly by our values : if you're not making money with your application, or even just pocket change or covering your costs, we will offer it for free. However, if you are a company, or if you start making a chunk of money with your app, we will ask you to help fund the development.

As always with our development, and also for security purposes, the driver will be closed source. We know that may be a disappointment to many, but we believe strongly that having an option here, albeit imperfect, is better than stopping the development.

Collaboration opportunities and gaining access to the driver
