OCCT v17.1 is now available in its stable release, bringing a range of improvements and updates to our tests and expanding compatibility for Linux users.

Expanding Compatibility With Linux Distributions

As part of our continued commitment to Linux, we’re expanding the range of distributions supported by OCCT.

OCCT is now compatible with distributions including Debian Buster, Red Hat 8, and other releases dating back to 2018. This makes OCCT 

accessible to an even wider range of Linux workstations and systems

, including older configurations still in use today.

OCCT V17.1 also introduces IPMI monitoring support on Linux, expanding our monitoring capabilities for workstations and servers.

With IPMI support, OCCT can access additional hardware sensor data provided by the system’s management controller, giving users 

more detailed monitoring information on workstations and servers.

 This feature requires either FreeIPMI or IPMItool to be installed on the system.

Because OCCT relies on these external tools to retrieve IPMI data, monitoring is subject to their own limitations. For example, if the underlying tool refreshes sensor information every seven seconds, OCCT will reflect that same refresh interval.

V17.1 isn’t just about Linux. We’re also updating the 3D Adaptive test to Unreal Engine 5.7.

The main reason for this upgrade is performance. The previous version of 3D Adaptive was based on Unreal Engine 5.4, which lacked some of the optimizations needed to fully stress certain GPUs. With Unreal Engine 5.7, we can 

more easily reach maximum GPU power on certain GPUs

, while also gaining slightly finer control over the test's power curve.

For example, on our RTX 5080, the updated version of 3D Adaptive can reach 10 W more GPU power than the previous version.

The downside is that the newer engine requires slightly more RAM to run the test. We also took this opportunity to review the Unreal Engine files in OCCT and remove unused files, freeing up around 15 MB of storage and bringing the 

OCCT V17 introduced an improved crash recovery and save-state system

, providing more reliable post-crash diagnostics and preserving the latest known application state.

With V17.1, we’re taking this further based on feedback and crash reports from our users. The crash detection system has been reworked to 

improve how crash codes are captured and reported in the GUI

, making it easier to identify failures and better understand the conditions leading to a crash or freeze.

OCCT V17.1 continues our efforts to make OCCT more compatible, reliable, and useful across a wider range of systems.

IMPROVED RELIABILITY - Better support for portable installations, a reworked auto-update system, and enhanced crash recovery make OCCT more stable and easier to troubleshoot than ever.

One of the goals behind the new Memory Test architecture is to enable the community to create and share powerful testing scenarios.

OCCT v17 Stable Now Available: New Memory Test Presets, Launcher and optimizations

Last month, we released the first beta of OCCT v17, introducing one of the biggest evolutions in OCCT's history: a completely redesigned and fully modular Memory Test.

Today, we're rolling out the second and last phase of the v17 beta update, bringing 

major optimizations and quality-of-life improvements across the entire application.

 From significantly faster startup times and reduced memory usage to improved crash recovery, this update focuses on making OCCT faster, lighter, and more stable.

And because we're incredibly excited to see what the community can build with the new Memory Test system, 

 where 3 lucky winners will receive 3 years of OCCT Supporter Edition (more details below).

The first OCCT v17 beta last month introduced a full redesign of the Memory Test, rebuilt entirely from scratch around a highly modular architecture.

In this second wave of the v17 beta, we focused heavily on performance, reliability, and overall usability. Here are some of the key improvements included in this update:

We wanted OCCT to be faster from the very start, so we have built a brand-new launcher. While you may not notice visible interface changes, internal testing shows startup times improved by approximately 10% to 30%.

Reducing OCCT's resource consumption has always been a priority, especially for stress testing scenarios where system resources should remain available for the workloads being tested.

With v17 Beta, overall memory usage has been reduced by approximately 15% to 30%. In addition, monitoring data is now written directly to disk, further lowering memory usage mid-certificate.

To increase reliability when running OCCT from USB drives, external storage, or network locations, parts of the application will now reside in the system's temporary folder during execution.

Keeping OCCT updated is essential to ensure users always have access to the latest fixes, optimizations, and testing features. For v17, the update process has been reworked to improve reliability.

IMPROVED CRASH RECOVERY AND SAVE STATE SYSTEM - 

To improve post-crash diagnostics, we have significantly enhanced OCCT's “Save State to Disk” functionality. OCCT will now preserve the latest known application state more reliably, making it easier to investigate failures and understand the system conditions leading up to a crash or freeze.

To help grow the new Memory Test ecosystem, we're looking to 

integrate more community-created presets directly into OCCT.

OCCT v17 Beta introduces a complete redesign of the Memory Test. This new version is built around 

a highly modular system, launching with 16 distinct blocks

, including our legacy test for those who prefer a familiar approach. This is one of the most customizable memory testing solutions available today.

You now have full control over how your memory stress tests are built and executed.

Traditionally, a stress test relies on predefined profiles with fixed instructions in a rigid sequence. With the new test, we wanted to go further, give you more flexibility.

We've broken down the traditional testing model into individual building blocks. 

Each block performs a specific function, and you can combine them 

to create a test tailored to your exact needs.

At launch, the beta includes 16 blocks inspired by TM5 and MemTest86. These are not reused implementations; we analyzed and rebuilt them from the ground up within OCCT.

The key difference with this modular approach is that you are in full control. This design also enables you to 

create custom presets, save them, and share them 

The 16 different blocks are organized in 

Non-idempotent tests – Modify the memory state by writing specific patterns.

Idempotent tests – Move data around while preserving the initial memory state.

Check block – Responsible for detecting errors. (Important: tests do not check for errors unless a check block is included.)

All-in-one block – Predefined combinations of blocks, always including error checking. This category includes OCCT’s legacy memory test.

Utility blocks - Designed to provide more flexibility, such as waiting blocks and loop blocks.

Start with a non-idempotent block to write a pattern into memory

Apply idempotent blocks and/or utility blocks to stress the data

Finish with a check block to detect potential errors

While the modular system offers powerful customization, we know not everyone wants to build tests from scratch. That's why OCCT v17 includes:

From the very beginning, our goal with the OCCT System Tuning tool has been simple: deliver a streamlined, fully integrated tuning experience directly inside OCCT.

With support for Intel Arrow Lake and the upcoming Arrow Lake Refresh, we're

While support is currently limited to Intel CPUs in the short term, we recognize that this excludes a significant portion of users. 

Expanding compatibility remains a top priority

, and our objective is to support as many CPU generations and vendors as possible.

Intel provided us with the technical documentation required to implement this level of deep integration. To offer the same quality of support for other manufacturers, we would need equivalent access to their documentation, and we are actively working to obtain it.

Available on both Windows and Linux, this also marks the first time a fully integrated CPU tuning tool of this kind has been brought to Linux within OCCT.

. While it is active, the maximum voltage that can be set is limited. Given the technical nature of the parameters involved, we will be releasing additional information and tutorials for beginners in the coming weeks.

Advanced users will, of course, be able to disable this limitation and fine-tune settings as they see fit.
